Dave Hard at Work

Welcome to my “Long Exposure Photography” workshop page. I started my photography career 16 years ago and have had the privilege to explore and create images all over the BC coast. I continue to push the boundaries and create new and captivating images each and every time I photograph. What makes myself unique for my workshops is I am able to come along side anyone’s ability or level and help them progress faster in the photographic journey.
I hope to see you at the next workshop Long Exposure Photography workshop, April 23-24, 2022.

Welcome to the Long Exposure Photography workshop,
“The Art of Seeing What You Can’t See”
Schedule
The foundation of the Saturday morning webinar portion will be to prepare you for the set up and technical knowledge to make long exposure images. The power point presentation includes set by step instructions with examples.
During the Sunday “In the field” session, we will make several long exposure images together at my two favourite locations on the Saanich Peninsula. Sunday will be approx. 4.5 hours (2 locations).
Singh Ray Filters has graciously supplied a set of 82mm threaded circular filters for use during the workshop. The kits includes a 5, 10 and 15 stop 82mm (and one 15 stop 77mm) neutral density filters (and a few polarizers). I also have an assortment of step up rings. If you need a step up ring for the workshop, please check with me to make sure I have your size on hand.
What you will learn
– the technical set up for a long exposure image including filter use, bulb vs time function, remotes, phone apps, long exposure noise reduction, and when and when not to use the above options. Oh, and there is more.
– assess the scene for a long exposure seascape image, including tides, water movement, clouds, & cloud movement.
Summary
Saturday 10-11:30am PST – Online Zoom call for approx. 1.5 hours. This is designed to prepare you for the “In the field” session.
Sunday 12:00-4:30pm PST – “In the field” session in two locations close to each other (bring a packed lunch if you like). This is where we will practice what was learned in the Zoom session the day prior.
Suggested equipment list:
– one mirrorless or DSLR camera (with the lowest native ISO setting as possible, i.e. 64 or 100)
– one wide angle zoom lens (14-30mm), one wide angle mid range Zoom (24-70mm) that have threads on the front for filters
– one sturdy tripod is essential
– one remote is essential. Must be able start and stop the shutter while in bulb mode. If your camera has the “time” function (in manual mode) like the Nikon Z7 or Z7ii, a remote is not necessary.
– filters are a bonus, but not mandatory for the workshop. I have filters to share. If you need a specific step up ring size, please let me know well in advance.
